Consultation on Colchester Academy admission arrangements for 2021/22
The South Suffolk Learning Trust (SSLT) is the Admissions Authority for Colchester Academy, and is proposing to make changes to the admission arrangements for the Academy for the academic Year 2021/22. As such The Admissions Code of Practice requires an Admissions Authority to consult with its stakeholders.
The following changes to the Colchester Academy’s current admission arrangements are being proposed.
1. A change in the oversubscription criteria to bring the Academy in line with the oversubscription criteria used in other SSLT Schools.
2. A reduction in the Published Admissions Number (PAN) to 182. This is being proposed for the following reasons;
a. The current PAN for Colchester Academy is 240. This means that the number of pupils admitted into the school at Year 7 is limited to 240. In 2019 there were 175 admissions into Year 7.
b. Over the previous 3 years Year 7 admissions to the Academy have been as follows: 2018 163, 2017 152, and in 2016 123.
c. Reducing the PAN will assist the Governing Body in providing stability to their long-term planning while continuing to provide an appropriate number of places for future pupil numbers living in the surrounding area and attending local primary schools.
d. Uncertainty in cohort numbers makes curriculum planning extremely difficult.
e. A PAN of 182 equates to 7 classes with an average size of 26 students.
f. Essex County Council’s 10-year plan indicates there will be a surplus of school places in Colchester of between 161 and 221 in 2021/22, partly due to an additional secondary opening in the north of Colchester.
