Sport

Here at Colchester Academy we strive to enhance students' passion gained during their Key Stage 3 and outside experiences of PE and utilise this within this vocational qualification. This course is ideal for students who inspire to have a career in the sporting sector and support those who want to move on to further education in a sport context. We aspire to create excellence in a full range of knowledge and skills which will drive them to be independent and confident learners.

 

Key Stage 4

The two-year course is set up to equip students with resilience, through the range of examination and assignment style writing that the course consists of. Through the range of unit’s students will have an in-depth understanding of how our bodies, minds and skills work together to create the perfect sports person. This will help them apply the skills learnt to their chosen contexts in both theoretical and practical ways. The course works through four main elements; fitness for sport and exercise, practical sports performance, the mind and sports performance and training for personal fitness.

Year 10 Topics Covered:  
Autumn
  • Unit 1: Fitness for Sport and exercise - Learning aim A: Know about the components of fitness and the principles of training
  • Unit 1: Fitness for Sport and Exercise - Learning aim B: Explore different fitness training methods
Spring
  • Unit 1: Fitness for Sport and Exercise - Learning aim C: Investigate fitness testing to determine fitness levels
  • STUDENTS COMPLETE EXAM
  • Unit 3: Applying the Principles of Personal Training - Learning aim A: Design a personal fitness training programme
Summer
  • Unit 3: Applying the Principles of Personal Training - Learning aim B: Know about the musculoskeletal system and cardiorespiratory system and the effects on the body during fitness training
  • Unit 3: Applying the Principles of Personal Training - Learning aim C: Implement a self-designed personal fitness training programme to achieve own goals and objectives
  • Unit 3: Applying the Principles of Personal Training - Learning aim D: Review a personal fitness training programme
Year 11 Topics Covered:  
Autumn
  • Unit 4: The Mind and Sports Performance - Learning aim A: Investigate personality and its effect on sports performance
  • Unit 4: The Mind and Sports Performance - Learning aim B: Explore the influence that motivation and self-confidence have on sports performance
  • Unit 4: The Mind and Sports Performance - Learning aim C: Know about arousal and anxiety, and the effects they have on sports performance
Spring
  • Unit 2: Practical Sports Performance - Learning aim A: Understand the rules, regulations and scoring systems for selected sports
  • Unit 2: Practical Sports Performance - Learning aim B: Practically demonstrate skills, techniques and tactics in selected sports
Summer
  • Unit 2: Practical Sports Performance - Learning aim C: Be able to review sports performance
