Child Development

 

Vision

At Colchester Academy we have a clear philosophy of “It takes a big heart to shape little minds” and this course enables students of all abilities and mindsets to show excellence in this unique course. In this Level 2 Tech Award BTEC Child Development Vocational Qualification we are striving to help students learn a wide range of knowledge, to enhance their understanding of a child's life and what it takes to work within a job surrounding this. 

 

Key Stage 4

This course is well suited to those who are motivated to consider a career in the early years sectors or midwifery, or have a keen interest in the development of children, as well as those who, at some point, want to understand how their own childrens’ minds work and what they can do to aid them. We seek to motivate and equip students with a full range of knowledge, skills and understanding to drive them to success, in both the two years of study and in further courses they may take. The assignment based style in the majority of this course enables learners to be both independent and resilient to achieve the highest possible grade. This two year course covers the following topics; Children’s Growth and Development, learning through play and Supporting children to play, learn and develop. Students will be able to gain knowledge and then apply these knowledge in scenario based learning. 

 

Year 10

Topics Covered:

Autumn

  • Component 1: Children’s Growth and Development - Learning aim A: Understand the Principles of Growth and Development
  • Component 1: Children’s Growth and Development  - Learning aim B: Understand how factors impact on children’s overall development

Spring

  • Component 1: Children’s Growth and Development- Task Final work
  • Task Submission (60 marks)

Summer

  • Component  2: Learning through Play - Learning aim A: Understanding how children Play
  • Component  2: Learning through Play - Learning aim B: Understand how children’s learning can be supported through play

 

Year 11

Topics Covered:

Autumn

  • Component 2 :Learning through Play- Task Final work
  • Task Submission (60 marks)
  • Unit 3: supporting Children to play, learn and Develop - Learning aim A: Know about adaptations needed to make activities to meet the needs of individual needs, promote inclusion and be aware of the role of the adult

Spring

  • Unit 3: supporting Children to play, learn and Develop - Learning aim B: Understand the types of adaptations that may need to be made to activities due to individual needs, environmental risks and hazards. 
  • Unit 3: supporting Children to play, learn and Develop - Learning aim C: Apply knowledge and understanding to adapt activities to meet children's individual needs and promote inclusion
  • Unit 3: supporting Children to play, learn and Develop - Learning aim D: Make connections between areas of development, children's individual needs and activities to ensure adapted activities best support children to develop

Summer

  • Unit 3: supporting Children to play, learn and Develop - Final Exam
